Dogs who didn't have the disease but carried the DMD gene were used for breeding. Deprived of loving homes, they frantically paced the slatted floors and bit the bars of small cages in frustration. They didn't even have the comfort of a blanket.
To gauge just how much a dog's muscles have deteriorated, Kornegay has invented a crude technique that could pass for medieval torture: He repeatedly stretches them with a motorized lever in order to cause muscle tears.
Kornegay has been at this for more than 30 years. Puppies in his laboratory who are born with DMD are so weak at birth that they require extra nutrition. By 6 weeks of age, their hind limbs have shifted forward, making walking difficult, and some are unable to open their mouths or jaws.

Every year on March 6th, residents of a village in Bulgaria perform a horrific act called "dog spinning” in the mistaken belief that this will prevent rabies and keep away evil spirits. During this cruel ritual, a rope is tied around a dog's chest, and the dog is suspended above a body of water. The dog is twisted until the rope is as tight as it will get, pressing painfully into the poor animal. Then, the rope is released, and the dog spins around wildly. Before the dog even has a chance to catch its breath, it's dumped into the freezing water.

Participants say that the dogs are not harmed during this ritual, but that's completely false. Some dogs have drowned because they're too disoriented to swim to the surface of the water. The dogs who survive are terrified and traumatized by their ordeal. The ritual was officially banned by the Bulgarian government in 2006, but the law is not enforced, and people continue performing the sadistic ritual.
For years, animal advocates in Bulgaria have tried to put an end to this atrocity, desperately urging villagers to use stuffed dogs instead. But until police officers start enforcing the ban on the practice, it will keep happening, and more dogs will suffer and die. Shocking new images have emerged of the cruel dog meat trade in Nagaland, India, where terrified stray dogs and stolen family pets are tied up, stuffed into sacks so they cannot move and transported -- sometimes tied to the roof of a car -- to restaurants where brutal slaughter awaits.

My heart hurts for my Doja! She was issued an order to destroy from MACC. I filed an appeal and attended a hearing 8/14. I received notice on 8/16 that the destruct order is upheld. I still believe Doja can be saved and have retained an Attorney to assist with apealing the ruling to the MN Court of Appeals.
Doja has been in a 3 x 4 enclosed kennel at MACC for 20 days now and will remain alive in quarentine until we beat this. I visit Doja often which are limited to 5mins - she is very sad and wants to come home! I know she misses her Kitty-Koo, furry friend Sushi, and King Charles Cavalier BF, Charley!

This recent incident Doja's leash & required muzzle snapped and she approached a man who immediately started to kick her. She reacted by biting him - the man said he was ok and walked away. Shortly after the man came back with a nurse - turns out he is a mentally ill patient in a group home close to where I live. Seeing that the man is under their care they legally had to report it. MACC came shortly after and she has been in their facility ever since.
I am very thankful for the love and support my friends, family, relatives, co-workers, and complete strangers have showed during the past few weeks.
This whole process has not only been very stressful but expensive as well.
